When Something Goes Wrong: Braces Emergencies & Quick Fixes
Is It Really an Emergency?
If you’re not in pain and your braces are still mostly intact, you’re probably okay to wait until regular office hours. But if something’s hurting, don’t tough it out—reach out to your ortho team
Call your orthodontist if:
- A wire is poking and causing pain
- A bracket is completely detached or broken
- You’re experiencing significant pain or swelling
- You’re unsure and need help—better safe than sorry!
Common Braces Issues & What to Do
Loose Bracket
If a bracket comes loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax if it’s irritating. Avoid hard or sticky foods, and call to schedule a repair.
Poking Wire
Try gently pushing the wire back into place with a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab. If that doesn’t work, place wax over the end. Don’t cut the wire yourself—call us for guidance.
Loose Band or Wire Ligature
If a small rubber band or metal tie comes loose, don’t worry—it happens. If you can, remove the loose piece and save it to bring in. Call your ortho to find out if it needs to be replaced soon.
Broken or Lost Retainer/Appliance
Call your orthodontist right away if you lose or break any removable appliances. Don’t try to fix them yourself.
Comfort Tips While You Wait
- Use orthodontic wax to cover sharp edges
- Rinse with warm salt water to soothe irritation
- Stick to soft, non-irritating foods
- Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed
